Banded Mexican Onyx Polished Cut Base - One of a Kind, 5 Inch

If your decor leans toward warm neutrals, banded Mexican onyx fits right in, and this polished cut base is a fine example.

The brown, yellow and white banding shows clearly through the polished face, and each band records a separate layer of mineral that built up over time. It is hand worked and sits on a flat cut base, so it stays steady on a shelf, a desk, a side table or a mantel. At about 5 inches across and 2.5 inches thick, it is solid and substantial in the hand. A common question is whether this is the same as black onyx: it is not. Mexican onyx is banded calcite, a softer stone, while true onyx is a form of chalcedony. It makes a warm, natural gift for a housewarming or a lover of earthy decor. This is the exact piece shown.

The piece is about 5 by 4 by 2.5 inches. Look at the ruler photo for scale.

About Mexican Onyx

Mexican onyx is banded calcite, sometimes called onyx marble, rather than true onyx, which is banded chalcedony. Its soft layered bands come from mineral deposits building up over time. Calcite is soft and reacts with acids, so keep it away from acidic cleaners and harder objects.

Stone Meaning: Onyx is traditionally associated with strength and steadiness.
