This amethyst stalactite formation still has the volcanic rock it grew from attached underneath, with purple crystal crowded across the top.
That base is gray basalt with green tones, which makes the purple above it look even richer and shows exactly where the crystal came from. Calcite adds a second mineral to the mix, so there is more to look at up close than in an ordinary amethyst cluster. It is sized for a mantel, a side table or a wide shelf, where it can be seen from the front and both sides. For a mineral collector, the stalactite growth and the intact matrix are the reasons to choose this piece over a plain cut cluster.
Amethyst stalactites form inside geodes in volcanic basalt, as mineral rich water drips through the cavity and builds layers of chalcedony and amethyst around a central core; mines near Artigas, Uruguay are well known for them. Calcite, calcium carbonate, often crystallizes later in the same pockets and is far softer than the amethyst, 3 on the Mohs scale.
Stone Meaning: Amethyst is traditionally associated with calm and balance.
