Stilbite belongs to the zeolites, a family of minerals that crystallize inside the gas pockets of volcanic rock, and this specimen still sits on its host matrix.

It is about as deep as it is wide, a compact block that looks good from several sides, so you can turn it on a shelf until you find the view you like best. The matrix gives the crystals context, showing how they grew rather than presenting them as a loose fragment, which is what many collectors look for in a zeolite. It works on an office shelf, in a cabinet of volcanic minerals, or with a collector who prefers small, chunky specimens to tall ones. For a geology fan, it is a thoughtful upgrade from tumbled stones to a true mineral specimen.

About Stilbite

Stilbite is a zeolite group mineral, a hydrous calcium sodium aluminum silicate. It is usually white or colorless but also occurs in salmon, pink and orange, and it often grows as sheaf or bow tie shaped bundles of thin crystals. It is fairly soft, 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, and the basalts of India's Deccan Traps are a prolific source.

Stone Meaning: Stilbite is traditionally associated with creativity and calm.
