Sleek, glossy black agate gives this geode bookend pair a modern, dramatic look. The two halves form a matching pair, so their bands and crystal centers mirror each other, and together they weigh 3 to 6 pounds.

That weight holds up a row of paperbacks, journals or records on a desk, dresser or bookshelf. The polished faces are dyed black for a bold, even color. Black suits minimalist, industrial and gothic spaces alike, and the pair makes a striking gift for readers and collectors.

About Agate Geode Bookends

Agate is a translucent form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer inside a rock cavity, and some of those cavities become crystal-lined geodes. At Mohs 7, agate is hard enough to polish to a glassy face. Because agate is slightly porous, it takes dye well, which is how the vivid colored bookends in the trade are made.
