Bright silvery galena sits against white quartz in this raw mineral specimen from the Mibladen Mine in Morocco. Each piece measures about 20 to 28 millimeters by 28 to 57 millimeters.
It makes a striking conversation piece on a desk or shelf and an interesting example of a metallic ore. Choose 1 or 5.
Galena is lead sulfide, so wash your hands after handling it, keep it away from children and pets, and do not use it in jewelry that touches skin or in water. It is soft and very heavy for its size, and fresh silver faces tarnish to dull gray over time. Each specimen varies in shape and mix of quartz.
Galena is lead sulfide, the main ore of lead. It often breaks into neat cubes because it splits cleanly in three directions at right angles, and it is surprisingly heavy, about seven times the weight of the same volume of water.
