Pyrite usually grows as cubes, so a flat golden disc with rays fanning out from the center surprises almost everyone who sees one. That is a pyrite sun, also known as a pyrite dollar or miners dollar.
Set it on a small stand in a cabinet, on a desk or on an altar, where its metallic sunburst gets noticed. Pyrite suns show how the same mineral can take very different shapes, and they make a memorable gift for a rock hound, a geology enthusiast or someone celebrating a new business. Each one has its own pattern of rays, so no two look alike.
Each sun is about 55 to 60 millimeters across. Some photos are enlarged to show detail; the photo with a quarter shows the true size.
Pyrite suns are flat radiating disks of pyrite, the iron sulfide nicknamed fool's gold. The best known come from coal mines near Sparta, Illinois, where they grew sideways between thin layers of shale about 300 million years old. Some contain a little marcasite, which can break down if kept damp.
Stone Meaning: Pyrite is traditionally associated with confidence and abundance.
