This full kilogram bag, about 2.2 pounds, holds brightly colored tumbled agate from southern Brazil. Each bag holds about 25 to 30 smooth stones, and each stone measures roughly 1 to 2 inches.
Fill vases, bowls and jars with color, decorate plant pots, build crystal grids, or use the stones for macrame, wire wrapping and other crafts. The mix of colors makes it a fun bulk buy for teachers, party favors and gift bags.
The bright colors are dyed, since agate is porous and takes dye well. Avoid soaking the stones for long periods, which can draw out some color. Colors, sizes and shapes vary by bag.
Agate is a translucent, banded variety of microcrystalline quartz, rated 7 on the Mohs scale. Its bands form as silica is deposited layer by layer inside a rock cavity. Agate is slightly porous, so it takes dye well, which is how most vividly colored agate carvings and decor pieces in the trade are made.
