Pyrite takes its name from pyr, the Greek word for fire, because it can throw sparks when struck against steel.

This high grade specimen pairs brassy, metallic pyrite with crystal quartz matrix, so you get two contrasting textures in one piece: the bright luster of the iron sulfide against the glassy quartz. It is a natural rough formation, not cut or polished, and the close up photo shows the crystal detail. Nearly 3 kilograms and about 7 inches across, it makes a centerpiece for a display cabinet, an executive desk or an office bookshelf. Pyrite's nickname, fool's gold, makes it a fun gift for a new business, a promotion or a geology fan, and the quartz adds a second mineral for collectors. This is the exact specimen shown.

The cluster is about 7 by 6.5 by 4.875 inches tall and weighs about 2.97 kilograms (6 lb 8 oz). Look at the ruler photo for scale.

About Pyrite on Quartz

Pyrite is iron sulfide, the most common sulfide mineral, nicknamed fool's gold for its brassy color and metallic luster. It often forms natural cubes, octahedrons or pyritohedrons. Its name comes from the Greek pyrites lithos, the stone that strikes fire. Quartz, silicon dioxide, is hard and resistant to weathering.

Stone Meaning: Pyrite is traditionally associated with luck and abundance.
