Optical Calcite Sphere - Pick Your Exact Piece, Clear, 3 Inch

Look through a clear optical calcite sphere and lines behind it can appear doubled. That effect, called double refraction, is what made Iceland spar famous, and these polished spheres show it beautifully.

They are fascinating to hold up to a book or a window, and they bring a quiet, glassy sparkle to a desk or shelf. An optical calcite sphere makes a memorable gift for a science lover, a photographer or anyone who enjoys a little everyday wonder. Each sphere has its own inner sheen.

Each numbered option is pictured on its own, so the piece you see is the piece you receive. Both spheres are about 3 inches across.

About Optical Calcite

Calcite is calcium carbonate with a hardness of 3. Clear calcite, known as Iceland spar or optical calcite, shows strong double refraction, splitting light into two rays so objects seen through it appear doubled.

Stone Meaning: Calcite is traditionally associated with clarity and emotional balance.

Sizes by Number

• 1: 3"
• 2: 3"

Add a Sphere Stand

A stand keeps a sphere from rolling and lifts it into view, so it looks finished on a shelf, desk or altar. Pick one from our crystal sphere stands and holders, with carved wood, brass, metal and clear acrylic styles. Check the stand size against the sphere diameter for a secure fit.

Additional Details

• You receive the exact optical calcite sphere you select (1 or 2).
• Mohs hardness 3; calcite scratches easily and can cleave if dropped. Keep away from water and acids, and on a stand.
• Photos show the actual pieces.
