Mother of Pearl Carved Elephant Cabochon

Iridescent mother of pearl is carved and polished into a small elephant cabochon, about 15 by 25 millimeters and 2 millimeters thick. It shimmers in white, cream and soft rainbow tones as it catches the light.

Glue it into a bezel setting for a pendant or ring, add it to a mosaic or scrapbook, or keep it in a collection of carved shells. It is a sweet gift for elephant lovers.

Mother of pearl is soft and sensitive to acids, so keep it away from perfume, lotion and harsh cleaners. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it. Each cabochon varies slightly in shimmer and color.

About Mother of Pearl

Mother of pearl, or nacre, is the iridescent inner shell layer made by some mollusks, the same material that forms pearls. It is built from microscopic aragonite platelets, and its rainbow shimmer comes from those thin layers interfering with light.
