Grape agate is not really agate at all. It is botryoidal chalcedony, purple microcrystalline quartz in tiny rounded clusters, and this large piece from Indonesia shows the formation on a grand scale.

The surface is covered in small, rounded bubbles of chalcedony, which is where the grape name comes from, and the color runs from light purple to deep teal across the piece. At about 18 inches long and 14 pounds, it makes a statement in a living room, an office, a library or a meditation space, and it holds its own on a large console or a dedicated display shelf. Grape agate comes from Sulawesi, Indonesia, a relatively new find, and its purple comes from trace iron. A full cluster of this size is a meaningful anchor piece for a mineral collection and a memorable gift for a milestone. This is the exact cluster shown.

The cluster is about 18 by 8 by 6 inches and weighs about 6.335 kilograms (14 pounds).

About Grape Agate

Grape agate is botryoidal, or grape shaped, chalcedony, more precisely amethystine botryoidal chalcedony, colored purple by trace iron. It is not true agate because it lacks agate banding. It comes from the Batu Manakarra mining district of Sulawesi, Indonesia, a relatively new find, and its colors include deep purple, lavender, lilac and greenish blue.

Stone Meaning: Grape agate is traditionally associated with calm and spiritual growth.
