Goethite is the mineral behind the color of rust, and in cluster form it becomes a textured specimen worth a close look.
This one lies flat for display, so it sits steadily on a shelf, in a cabinet or on a desk without a stand. Its natural surface rewards a lamp angled from the side, which picks out the texture and shine. Mineral collectors starting a specimen shelf, and anyone interested in geology or iron minerals, will find it a satisfying addition that fits easily in a display case.
Goethite is an iron oxide hydroxide that ranges from yellowish and reddish brown to black, with a luster from adamantine to dull. It was first described in 1806 and named after the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is moderately soft, about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, so it is best kept as a display specimen.
