This goethite cluster is all about texture: rounded, bubbly formations across the top that change as you turn it.
Flip it over and the bottom shows rougher natural formations, so the piece reads differently from each side. It fits in one hand and sits on a shelf or in a cabinet, where a small lamp brings the surface into relief. Give it to a mineral collector, a geology graduate or someone whose shelf is all quartz and needs a different kind of surface.
An iron oxide hydroxide, goethite ranges from yellowish and reddish brown to black, with a luster from adamantine to dull. It was first described in 1806 and named after the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is moderately soft, about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, so it is best kept as a display specimen.
