Elestial Alligator Smoky Quartz with Gold and Black Rutile, 6 x 4 In

This elestial smoky quartz from Brazil carries gold and black rutile both inside the crystal and on its surface.

Elestial, or skeletal, quartz grows with its edges outpacing its faces, which leaves the layered, ridged texture traders call alligator skin, and here that texture is paired with fibrous rutile that shines against the brown smokey quartz. At about 6 by 4 by 3 inches, it is a solid, hand filling specimen with plenty of surface to study. It came back with us from our most recent buying trip to Brazil, the country that supplies most of the world's commercial smoky quartz. It suits a mineral shelf, a desk or a lit cabinet where the rutile can catch the light. The rutile needles are the heart of this piece, not a flaw. This is the exact crystal shown.

The crystal is about 6 inches long, 4 inches wide and 3 inches deep. The ruler photo helps with scale.

About Elestial Quartz and Black Rutile

Elestial is a market name for skeletal quartz, which grows in unusually saturated conditions when crystal edges grow faster than the faces, leaving recessed, layered faces. Rutile is titanium dioxide that commonly forms needle like crystals, and groups of these needles are often found penetrating quartz. Rutile is usually golden to reddish brown, and it turns black when rich in niobium and tantalum.

Stone Meaning: Rutilated smoky quartz is traditionally associated with clarity and grounding.
