Few amethyst pieces show you how they grew, and an amethyst stalactite is one of them.
On top you see the rounded stalactite form; underneath, the surface turns into purple amethyst clusters, so the piece has two very different faces. Display it lying on its side to show both, or turn the crystal side up for maximum sparkle under a lamp. It sits comfortably in one hand and on a small stand or shelf. A thoughtful pick for a mineral collector who already has a geode or cathedral and wants to see a less familiar way amethyst forms.
Stalactites form as mineral rich water drips and leaves layer after layer behind. Amethyst stalactites form this way inside geodes in volcanic basalt rather than in limestone caves, and they are well known from mines near Artigas, Uruguay. A cross section shows bands of chalcedony and amethyst around the core.
Stone Meaning: Amethyst is traditionally associated with calm and balance.
