Jacare is Portuguese for alligator, and it is the trade name for the deeply textured smoky quartz you see here.

This large natural formation comes from Brazil, and its surface carries the ridged, layered pattern that gives alligator quartz its name; it is also sold as elestial or skeletal smoky quartz. What sets the piece apart is the mica growing off the quartz, a second mineral that catches light differently from the smoky crystal around it. At about 8 inches long and 3.5 inches high, it is a centerpiece specimen for a cabinet, a study or a lit display shelf, where the texture rewards a close look. It suits a serious mineral collector, or someone marking a milestone such as a retirement or a big anniversary. The cluster in the photos is the one you will receive.

It measures approximately 8 by 3 by 3.5 inches, and one photo places it next to a ruler.

About Alligator Smoky Quartz

Alligator, or jacare, quartz is a trade name for a type of smoky quartz usually marketed as smoky elestial quartz; the name refers to a surface that resembles alligator skin. Elestial is a market name for skeletal quartz, which forms when crystal edges grow faster than the faces, leaving recessed, ribbed faces. Smoky quartz gets its brown color from natural radiation acting on trace aluminum.

Stone Meaning: Smoky quartz is traditionally associated with grounding and calm.
