Dyed purple and polished into a tower, this crystal piece puts color first. It is sold as dyed, so the strong purple is applied rather than natural.
The cut base lets it stand upright on a shelf, desk or windowsill, and the polished faces catch light as you walk past. Choose it for the color itself: a bold purple accent for a room in neutral tones, or a gift for someone who loves purple and does not need a natural amethyst.
Quartz and agate can be dyed because dye seeps into tiny fissures and the fine grained structure of the stone. Under magnification, dye shows up as color concentrated along those fissures, and lab testing of dyed purple material has shown the stone underneath to be ordinary quartz. Natural amethyst, by contrast, gets its purple from trace iron and natural radiation.
