No cutting, no polishing: this large raw cluster is watermelon tourmaline just as it came from the ground.
It is a hefty, freeform piece, close to a foot long, so it reads clearly from across a room. Pink, green and white areas spread across the cluster. Put it on a console, a mantel or a wide bookshelf where it can be seen from more than one side. It suits a collector building a tourmaline shelf, or someone born in October who would like a birthstone that is far more than a ring setting.
Tourmaline is a large group of boron silicate minerals, and elbaite is the lithium bearing species behind most colored tourmaline. Watermelon tourmaline is the name for crystals that are pink at the core and green at the rim. GIA notes that manganese produces the pinks and reds while iron produces the greens, and tourmaline is a birthstone for October.
Stone Meaning: Watermelon tourmaline is traditionally associated with harmony and balance.
