Serious mineral collectors will recognize what they are seeing right away: a large, high grade vanadinite cluster with dark red hexagonal crystals spread across a big dark stone matrix.
Vanadinite grows as short, six sided prisms with flat tops, and on a specimen this size the lustrous crystals cover a wide field you can study from every side, as the back, front and close up photos show. At about 17.6 inches long and 15.5 kilograms, it is a centerpiece for a mineral cabinet, a gallery wall shelf, a study or an office, and it holds its own as the anchor of a collection. Vanadinite is the main industrial ore of vanadium, which goes into specialty steel alloys, so this is also a piece with a real story behind it. This is the exact vanadinite cluster shown.
The cluster is about 17.625 by 8 by 5.75 inches tall and weighs about 15.5 kilograms (34 pounds).
Vanadinite is lead chlorovanadate, about 73 percent lead, and an ore of vanadium. It forms short hexagonal prisms in bright red, orange red, brown or yellow. Specimens from Mibladen, Morocco are well known among collectors, and the mineral is soft, about 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
Stone Meaning: Vanadinite is traditionally associated with motivation and focus.
