Did you know a stalagmite can take thousands of years to build up, one mineral layer at a time? This calcite stalagmite formation is a piece of that slow cave process you can set on a shelf.
Stalagmites grow upward from a cave floor as drips of mineral rich water leave calcium carbonate behind, the opposite of stalactites, which hang from the ceiling. The result is a natural, built up shape that no polishing could imitate. At about 10.5 inches long and roughly 3.2 kilograms, it has enough heft and size for a mineral cabinet, a library shelf or a study, and it gives a science lover or rock collector plenty to talk about. Close up, back, front and side photos show the texture, along with a hand and a ruler for scale. You get this exact stalagmite.
The formation is about 10.5 by 6.5 inches across and about 3.75 inches tall, and it weighs about 3.215 kilograms.
Stalagmites rise from a cave floor as minerals precipitate from water dripping from the ceiling; when one meets a stalactite above, the two form a column. Most are calcium carbonate, the mineral calcite and the main constituent of limestone, and limestone stalagmites can take thousands of years or more to grow. Calcite is soft, 3 on the Mohs scale, and scratches easily.
Stone Meaning: Calcite is traditionally associated with clarity and renewal.
