Seen from above, silver pyrolusite set into dark rock has a strong graphic look, and that view is what this low profile specimen is built for.
It lays flat, so it settles securely on a shelf, side table or display tray, and the metallic face is easy to see from standing height. The pyrolusite is embedded in the matrix rather than sitting on it, and it shows its brightest shine in natural light. It has width without bulk, which makes it easy to place in a mixed mineral collection. Give it to a retired miner, a geologist, or anyone who likes metallic minerals.
Pyrolusite usually grows as granular, fibrous or columnar masses, sometimes in kidney shaped crusts, and well formed crystals seldom occur. It rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale as crystals but drops to about 2 when massive, and its color runs from black to light gray.
Stone Meaning: Pyrolusite is traditionally associated with transformation and resolve.
