This polished point shows pink tourmaline crystals set right in the surrounding rock, with the matrix left in place.
A point cut from tourmaline on matrix is a different thing from a loose gem. The pink crystals stay where they grew, held in their host rock, and polishing the whole piece into a point brings out both. This one is full bodied, about 3 inches thick, so it looks substantial from the side as well as the front. Expect a mix of pink crystal and matrix across the surface rather than solid pink throughout, which is how this material naturally forms. Tourmaline is also the traditional gem for an eighth wedding anniversary, a nice detail for a gift card. The point you see in the photos is exactly the one that ships.
It stands about 5.5 inches tall and measures about 3.5 by 3 inches at its widest.
Tourmaline is a large group of boron silicate minerals, and elbaite, the lithium bearing species, is behind most colored gem tourmaline. Manganese produces its pinks and reds. Pink to red tourmaline often shows more visible inclusions than green or blue material, and tourmaline is an October birthstone as well as the gem for the eighth wedding anniversary.
Stone Meaning: Pink tourmaline is traditionally associated with love and compassion.
