Watermelon tourmaline gets its name from color zoning: a pink center wrapped in green, the same order as the fruit.
This is natural tourmaline still on its matrix, the rock it grew in, which keeps the crystals in their natural setting. The piece is large enough to be the main specimen on a shelf or in a cabinet, and the photos from the top, the side and in hand show how the crystals sit in the host rock. Raw tourmaline on matrix keeps the context a polished stone loses, so you can see where the crystals start and stop. It would suit an October birthday or an eighth anniversary, the anniversary traditionally linked to tourmaline.
Watermelon tourmaline is a zoned form of elbaite, the lithium bearing tourmaline species, with a pink to red core and a green outer zone that shows best in cross sections of the crystals. Elbaite forms in granite pegmatites alongside lepidolite and feldspar minerals, and its colors come from trace impurities. Tourmaline is one of the October birthstones.
Stone Meaning: Watermelon tourmaline is traditionally associated with harmony and balance.
