Two display faces in one small specimen: this vanadinite was cut into a slab with crystals growing on both sides.
Between the crystals you can see the oxidized host rock they grew on, which gives the piece an earthy, just out of the ground look and makes the red stand out more. Set it on edge in a small holder and you can switch faces whenever you like. Its slim shape slips easily into a collection cabinet or onto a narrow shelf. A good choice for a collector who wants to see how vanadinite sits on its matrix rather than a loose crystal.
Vanadinite is named for vanadium, its key element, and was first described in Mexico in 1801 as brown lead. Its crystals are short hexagonal prisms with a resinous to sub adamantine luster, and at 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale it is about as hard as a copper coin. Classic localities include Mibladen and Touissit in Morocco, Tsumeb in Namibia, and Arizona and New Mexico.
Stone Meaning: Vanadinite is traditionally associated with drive and creativity.
