Holding a fossil sand dollar is a small, quiet thrill. The same five petal pattern you find on the beach today is preserved here in stone, and these little fossils have been polished to bring the pattern out.
They are sold as is, with small flaws shown up close in the photos, which makes them an easy way to start a fossil collection or add an ancient touch to jewelry and craft projects. Tuck one into a card for a beach lover or anyone who collects curiosities.
Each numbered option is pictured on its own, so the piece you see is the piece you receive. Each one is about 28 to 33 millimeters across and 11 to 13 millimeters thick, with a flat base for display. Every piece is intact, and the photos show each flaw so you know exactly what you are getting.
Sand dollars are flat, burrowing sea urchins. Their skeleton, called a test, is made of calcium carbonate plates in a fivefold pattern, and the petal design is formed by rows of pores the animal used for gas exchange.
