Few people ever see emerald the way it actually forms, as green crystals still set in dark rock.
This large specimen shows emerald green rods spread across a green and black rock matrix, and the close up photo lets you study the crystals in detail. Keeping the emerald in the rock it grew in is what makes a piece like this worth displaying: you see the mineral and its setting together, the way a geologist would. At this size it can be the main display piece on a library shelf, in a mineral cabinet or on an office credenza where visitors stop to look. It is also a lasting gift for someone with a May birthday who would rather have the raw stone than a cut gem.
Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl, colored by traces of chromium or vanadium. Nearly all natural emeralds contain visible inclusions, which the gem trade calls a garden, and in matrix specimens the crystals remain attached to the rock they formed in.
Stone Meaning: Emerald is traditionally associated with love and harmony.
