Who could resist a cluster of pointed crystals in a deep yellow orange? This dogtooth calcite has large and small points rising from a stone matrix.
Dogtooth calcite is named for its pointed crystals, which really do resemble canine teeth, and this cluster has plenty of them, with larger points standing over smaller ones for a lot of depth. The warm color is the other draw: deep yellow orange reads well against white walls, dark wood and green plants. The crystals have a polished shine, so they reflect light nicely on a shelf. At about 5.75 inches across and 1.24 kilograms, it is a satisfying display piece for a collector's shelf, an office desk or a curio cabinet, and it makes a memorable gift for a mineral lover. This is the exact cluster shown.
The cluster is about 5.75 by 5.125 by 2.625 inches and weighs about 1.24 kilograms. Look at the ruler photo for scale.
Dogtooth spar is calcite that grows as acute scalenohedral crystals, named for their resemblance to dog teeth. It forms in caves, veins, fractures and geodes. Calcite is calcium carbonate and is soft, 3 on the Mohs scale, so it scratches easily.
Stone Meaning: Calcite is traditionally associated with balance and clarity.
