Brazil supplies most of the world's specimen tourmaline, and this large black tourmaline on matrix comes from there.
The crystals sit in their host rock with mica worked into the formation, so the black prisms, the matrix and the glint of mica all share the same surface. At this size it has enough presence to stand alone on a console, a mantel or the corner of a desk, and it holds up to a close look from every side. It is a good match for a collector who wants a substantial tourmaline specimen with locality, or a gift for an October birthday.
Tourmaline most often occurs as an accessory mineral in granite, pegmatite and gneiss, and large, well formed crystals grow in cavities and fractures during hydrothermal activity. Black schorl is by far the most common color. Tourmaline is also one of the two October birthstones.
Stone Meaning: Black tourmaline is traditionally associated with grounding and protection.
