HE-CRY-156
Arsenopyrite is a principal ore of arsenic, and few minerals show a silvery metallic luster quite so crisply.
This high grade specimen from Morocco pairs prismatic, lustrous arsenopyrite crystals with a quartz matrix, so the steely silver of the arsenopyrite plays against the glassy quartz under any light. At about 8.5 inches wide and over 4 kilograms, it is a cabinet piece for a mineral collection, a study or an office display, and it looks its best on a stand under a small spotlight. Arsenopyrite crystals often form with an off square cross section and striated faces. This is the exact arsenopyrite specimen shown.
The specimen is about 8.5 by 5.25 by 6 inches tall and weighs about 4.335 kilograms (9 pounds 9 ounces).
Arsenopyrite is iron arsenic sulfide, FeAsS, containing about 46 percent arsenic. It is steel gray to silver white with a metallic luster and forms striated prismatic crystals. Along with orpiment it is a principal ore of arsenic, and a struck piece gives off a garlic smell, a classic test for the mineral.
Stone Meaning: Arsenopyrite is traditionally associated with confidence and joy.
