About Brazilian Amethyst Geodes

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by trace iron exposed to natural radiation. In Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, it forms inside large geodes in volcanic rock, and that region together with neighboring Artigas, Uruguay is one of the largest amethyst producers in the world. A cathedral is a section of one of those geodes, cut so it stands with the crystal lined hollow facing out.
