Look between the purple crystals on this amethyst cluster and you will find dogtooth calcite, a second mineral growing right alongside the amethyst.
That pairing is what sets it apart from a plain amethyst chunk. The calcite crystals contrast with the glassy purple quartz, so the piece rewards a closer look every time you pass it. It is left raw and natural, sized to sit on a sideboard or a wide shelf, and it gives a mineral collector two species in one specimen. For a February birthday it is a more interesting gift than a standard cluster.
Amethyst is purple quartz colored by trace iron and natural radiation. Calcite, calcium carbonate, often crystallizes later in the same geode pockets, leaving calcite crystals among the purple points. Calcite is much softer than quartz, 3 on the Mohs scale.
Stone Meaning: Amethyst is traditionally associated with calm and balance.
