Need somewhere to drop your rings, keys or a few tumbled stones? These small Mexican onyx bowls have an irregular, wavy carved shape and soft yellow, cream and gray banding.
The stone is a yellow banded travertine calcite that forms in cave stalactites, mined in Tehuacan, Mexico, and each bowl was carved and polished by artisans in Mexico. Because the banding runs through the stone, every bowl shows its own pattern, and the light yellow tone works well on a dresser, on a nightstand, at an entryway or on an office desk. They are light, between about 182 and 269 grams, so they are easy to move around and make a thoughtful housewarming or hostess gift. A common question is whether Mexican onyx is true onyx: it is banded calcite, a softer stone, which is why it carves into these thin, flowing shapes. You choose the exact piece from the photos.
Each numbered option is pictured on its own, so the piece you see is the piece you receive. The five bowls range from about 5.375 to 6.5 inches across and 1 to 1.375 inches deep.
Mexican onyx is banded calcite, sometimes called onyx marble, rather than true onyx, which is banded chalcedony. Its soft layered bands come from mineral deposits building up over time. Calcite is soft and reacts with acids, so keep it away from acidic cleaners and harder objects.
Stone Meaning: Mexican onyx is traditionally associated with purity and renewal.
