This elephant is carved from black stone packed with orthoceras fossils, so polished fossil shells appear right in the carving. It measures about 3.5 by 1.75 inches.
Stand it on a desk, bookshelf or fossil shelf as a conversation piece, or give it to someone who loves elephants, fossils or natural history. Every carving shows a different fossil pattern, so no two are alike.
The dark stone takes a high polish, which shows off the fossil shells along the body. Its compact size fits easily on a desk or windowsill. Dust it with a dry cloth to keep the shine.
Orthoceras, whose name means straight horn, was an extinct nautiloid cephalopod with a long, straight shell. Nautiloids are an ancient lineage related to the modern nautilus. Many decorative Moroccan fossils sold as orthoceras are closely related straight-shelled orthoceratoids, polished to show the shells in dark stone.
