About Agate

Agate is a translucent, banded form of microcrystalline quartz, built up as silica settles in layers inside rock cavities. It is slightly porous, so it takes dye readily, and most agate sold in strong teals, blues and pinks has been dyed. The quartz underneath is hard and durable.
