Heavy bookends do the job better, and this pair has the weight to hold a full row of hardcovers without sliding. Both halves come from the same black agate geode, so the pattern mirrors from one side to the other.
They look sharp on a home office shelf, a living room bookcase or a mantel, and they make a strong gift for a reader, a new graduate or someone setting up their first place. Because each pair is cut from its own geode, the crystal center and banding you get are one of a kind, which is part of the appeal.
You get both halves, weighing 9 to 12 pounds together. Each bookend is cut and polished by hand in Brazil. The black color is dyed, and height and shape vary from pair to pair.
Agate is microcrystalline quartz that builds up in layers inside rock cavities, and some of those cavities become geodes lined with crystals. Each geode for these bookends is selected from rough material, cut in half, polished by hand in Brazil and dyed, so every pair has its own pattern. Agate has a hardness of 7.
Stone Meaning: Agate is traditionally associated with balance and harmony.
