About Amethyst Agate

Many of the hollow agates of southern Brazil and Uruguay hold a crop of amethyst crystals inside. The agate bands form as silica is laid down in layers on the cavity wall by groundwater of changing composition, and quartz crystals grow into the hollow that remains, purple where trace iron and natural radiation color them.
