Lift the lid on an agate geode box and a hollow of shimmering druzy crystal comes into view.
Each box is a natural geode that was cut so the top section sits back on as a lid, which means the piece closes up into a whole geode and opens to show the bright crystal center. Use it as a ring or earring box on a dresser, a keepsake box, or simply leave the lid propped beside it for display. Box 2 is the tallest, about 4 inches on every side, box 1 is wider and lower, and box 3 is the most compact, so you can match the size to what you want to keep inside. It makes a thoughtful gift for an anniversary, a birthday or anyone who has never seen the inside of a geode. You choose the exact piece from the photos.
Each numbered option is pictured on its own, so the piece you see is the piece you receive. Box 1 is about 4.25 by 4 by 2.75 inches, box 2 about 4 by 4 by 4 inches and box 3 about 3.75 by 3.5 by 3.5 inches. Look at the ruler photo for scale.
A geode starts as a hollow cavity in rock. Mineral rich groundwater seeps in and deposits silica in layers, forming the banded agate shell, and the last of it can crystallize as druzy, a coating of fine crystals that line the hollow. Agate is microcrystalline quartz, about 7 in hardness, so it takes a smooth polish.
Stone Meaning: Agate is traditionally associated with balance and stability.
