Cut and polished by hand in Brazil, the two halves of a small agate geode make a pair of mini bookends. Each half measures about 1.75 to 2.5 inches by 2.75 to 4.25 inches.
Choose natural, pink, purple, blue or black and brown. Use them to hold a few paperbacks or recipe cards upright, prop a door, or display them as a matched pair on a shelf. They make an easy gift.
The pink, purple, blue and black colors are dyed, so keep the bookends out of strong sunlight and wipe them with a dry cloth. Each pair varies in size, color and pattern.
Agate is a banded form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer inside a rock cavity, and some of those cavities become crystal-lined geodes. Agate is slightly porous, so it takes dye well, which is how the vivid colored bookends in the trade are made.
