Here is a thin, polished slice of Utah septarian, cut and finished as a coaster so its network of calcite seams lies flat across the face.
Septarian nodules crack as they form and those cracks later fill with calcite, which is what draws the web of veins you see on the surface. This coaster is sold as is because a large piece of it is missing, so the outline is irregular rather than round or square. If you would use it under a candle jar, a small plant or a mug, or simply set it on a shelf for the pattern, the missing section matters less than the face. The septarian slice pictured is the one you will receive.
It is about 5 by 6 by 0.25 inches and weighs about 350 grams. The ruler photo helps with scale.
Septarian is a concretion: a nodule of carbonate rich mudstone that cracked as it formed, leaving angular blocks separated by mineral filled seams. The filling is usually calcite, often yellow to brown, and the name comes from the Latin septum, meaning partition. Despite the nickname dragon stone and a passing likeness to dinosaur eggs, these nodules are geological formations, not fossils.
Stone Meaning: Septarian is traditionally associated with patience and communication.
