For the fossil lover who wants more than a polished spiral, this Triassic ammonite pair opens up the inside story, with hollow chambers lined in sparkling druzy.
You get both halves, so the matching faces can be displayed side by side to show the chambered spiral twice. The chambers have been agatized, and the druzy formations inside follow the pattern of the shell walls the animal built as it grew. This specimen was found in Timor, Indonesia, and dates to the Triassic Period. The bigger half is about 6.75 inches across, a size that reads clearly on a mantel, bookshelf or desk, and the smaller half fits comfortably in your hand. It makes a memorable gift for a geologist, a geology graduate or anyone who collects fossils. This is the exact pair shown.
The bigger half is about 6.75 by 5.75 by 1.625 inches and the smaller half about 5 by 4.25 by 1.25 inches; together they weigh about 1.775 kilograms.
Ammonites are extinct marine cephalopods with coiled shells divided into chambers by walls called septa, which form intricate suture patterns. Despite the shell shape, they are more closely related to octopus, squid and cuttlefish than to the nautilus. They died out at or shortly after the end Cretaceous extinction, about 66 million years ago.
Stone Meaning: Ammonite is traditionally associated with change and continuity.
