A skull carved in stone is a classic memento mori, and this sculpture is cut from natural smoky citrine with a pointed back and a flat base.
Crystal artisans in Brazil carved and polished the skull, then shaped the back into a long point, so the profile reads as both a skull and a crystal point. The flat base means it stands on a desk, a bookshelf or an office credenza without a stand. At over 8 inches long and about 1.5 kilograms, it is a real statement carving, the kind of piece that starts conversations in a study or a curiosity cabinet. The stone is natural smoky citrine. It suits a November birthday, as citrine is a November birthstone, or a collector of crystal skulls. This is the exact skull shown.
The skull is about 8.25 by 3 by 3.625 inches and weighs about 1.51 kilograms. Look at the ruler photo for scale.
Citrine is yellow to orange quartz, and most citrine on the market is heat treated amethyst, much of it from Brazil. Smoky tones in quartz come from natural radiation acting on trace aluminum. Quartz is hard, 7 on the Mohs scale, and takes a bright polish.
Stone Meaning: Citrine is traditionally associated with optimism and abundance.
