Pitch black and glassy, this obsidian cut base is natural volcanic glass with a bold, dark presence.
This cut base is polished on one face, with the edges shaved down so the natural shape of the glass still shows, and the flat base lets it stand on a shelf, desk or mantel. Each obsidian base has its own outline, and this one is broad and deep, at about 5 inches front to back. It is sold as is because there is a chip on it. If you want a bold, dark accent with a mirror shine and do not mind a chip, this one is worth a look. It suits a modern room, a home office or a collector of volcanic stones. Photos are stock images, so your piece will be similar.
The cut base is about 9 by 4 by 5 inches. Look at the ruler photo for scale.
Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too fast to crystallize. It breaks with a curved conchoidal fracture, which is why shaved and chipped edges show smooth, shell shaped surfaces, and a polished face takes a deep, mirror black shine.
Stone Meaning: Black obsidian is traditionally associated with grounding and protection.
