Earthy natural agate banding and a sparkling crystal center make these geode bookends a warm, understated way to organize a bookshelf.
Stand them at each end of a shelf of cookbooks, novels or records, or use one half alone as a display piece on a desk or mantel. The polished faces show the banding and crystal center, while the rough outer rind keeps the natural look of the geode.
You receive both halves, a complete pair weighing about 1 to 3 pounds. Each pair is hand cut and polished in Brazil from rough agate geodes, so height, shape and crystal center vary from pair to pair.
Agate is a translucent form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica is deposited layer by layer inside rock cavities, and some of those cavities become geodes. It has a hardness of 7, and because it is porous, most vividly colored agate is dyed.
