A big green tourmaline on matrix can be the centerpiece of an entire mineral collection.
This one is large, about 9.5 inches long, with green tourmaline crystals left rough on their natural matrix. That size gives it the presence to stand alone on a console table, a bookcase or a lit display shelf, where it can be seen from across the room rather than up close only. Green in tourmaline comes from iron, and possibly titanium, within the crystal. As a gift it suits an October birthday, an eighth anniversary or a collector ready for a major display piece. The photos show the exact specimen you will receive.
It measures about 9.5 by 5 by 4.5 inches; see the ruler photo for scale.
Tourmaline is a large group of boron silicate minerals, and the lithium bearing species elbaite is behind many colored gem tourmalines. GIA notes that iron, and possibly titanium, produces the greens and blues. Tourmaline is an October birthstone and the gem for an eighth anniversary.
Stone Meaning: Green tourmaline is traditionally associated with growth and vitality.
