Black obsidian is volcanic glass, and this semi polished point shows both of its faces: a mirror black, polished tip and a rough hewn, textured middle.
The polished areas have the deep, glassy shine obsidian is known for, while the worked but unpolished band through the center keeps the natural surface of the stone, so the piece reads as part sculpture, part raw specimen. A flat cut base lets it stand upright without a holder on a desk, mantel or altar. It is sold as is because there is a small chip at the tip. One of the photos is a close up of that chip, so you can judge it for yourself before ordering, and next to a point nearly 8 inches tall it is a small mark. If you like dark, minimal decor, black obsidian sits well with stone, metal and plants. The black obsidian point in the photos is the one you will receive.
Height is about 7.825 inches, with a footprint of about 3.75 by 3.5 inches. A photo in hand gives a sense of its size.
Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too quickly for crystals to grow. It polishes to a mirror shine, and any sheen comes from light reflecting off tiny inclusions. Because it is glass, it can chip if knocked.
Stone Meaning: Black obsidian is traditionally associated with grounding and protection.
