Ever seen white calcite perched right on amethyst points? This cathedral has it.
The close up photo shows the calcite formations against the amethyst, a contrast that makes the cave interesting to look into from more than one angle. It was hand cut and polished in Brazil, and the back is painted black, so it looks finished from the side as well. It has also been dyed, so its color is enhanced. Its weight and flat footprint mean it can pull double duty as a bookend on a sturdy shelf, or stand alone on a mantel or desk.
Amethyst is purple quartz colored by trace iron and natural radiation. Calcite, calcium carbonate, often crystallizes later in the same geode pockets, leaving calcite crystals perched on the purple points. Calcite is much softer than quartz, 3 on the Mohs scale, so those areas deserve gentler handling.
Stone Meaning: Amethyst is traditionally associated with calm and balance.
