Thin agate slices in blue, pink or purple show natural banding when held to the light. Each slice is drilled near the top from side to side and measures about 20 to 41 millimeters by 12 to 24 millimeters.
String them on wire, cord or a jump ring for pendants and earrings, hang several as a suncatcher, or add them to wind chimes. The photos show slices strung together as a necklace.
Bright blue, pink and purple agate is usually dyed, so avoid soaking the slices and keep them away from harsh cleaners. Each slice varies slightly in size and pattern.
Agate is a translucent, banded variety of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica is deposited layer by layer inside a rock cavity, and because it is slightly porous, it takes dye well.
