Two halves of one ammonite, cut and polished to show the chambered spiral inside. This medium hematite ammonite fossil pair has rich metallic color and crisp detail, and because both halves come from the same shell, they match naturally.
At about 32 to 37 millimeters, the medium size sits between our petite and large pairs. It is big enough for a statement pendant or a pair of bold earrings and still small enough for cabochon settings. Collectors like displaying the two faces side by side.
Ammonites were coiled-shell marine cephalopods, more closely related to today's octopus, squid and cuttlefish than to the nautilus. Their shells were divided into chambers by walls with intricate suture patterns, which is what you see when one is split. They died out at the end of the Cretaceous, about 66 million years ago.
Are both halves from the same ammonite? Yes, the pair is one fossil split in two, so the spirals mirror each other.
How old are ammonites? Ammonites as a group died out about 66 million years ago.
