Two halves of the same geode, cut and polished to stand face to face, make purple agate bookends that hold books in place and look striking from across the room.
Stand them at each end of a shelf of cookbooks, novels or records, or use one half alone as a display piece on a desk or mantel. The polished faces show the banding and crystal center, while the rough outer rind keeps the natural look of the geode.
You receive both halves, a complete pair weighing about 3 to 6 pounds. Each pair is hand cut and polished in Brazil from rough agate geodes, so height, shape and crystal center vary. The purple color is dyed.
Agate is a translucent form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica is deposited layer by layer inside rock cavities, and some of those cavities become geodes. It has a hardness of 7, and because it is porous, most vividly colored agate is dyed.
