Carved one at a time into the shape of an old-fashioned key, these gemstone keys are charming keepsakes and craft pieces. Each measures about 26 by 46 millimeters to 25 by 52 millimeters, 7 to 10 millimeters thick, and weighs around 15 grams.
Keys are a classic symbol of new beginnings, which makes one a thoughtful gift for a new home, graduation, 18th or 21st birthday, or new job. Choose from twelve stones and use it on a desk, in a shadow box, as a wedding favor or in a wire-wrapped pendant. A set in several stones also makes an eye-catching display.
Most options are forms of quartz with a Mohs hardness of 7, including rose, smoky, blue, green and golden quartz, which gets its yellow coating from iron minerals, and hematoid quartz, which contains red iron oxide. Amazonite is a blue-green feldspar, sodalite a royal blue mineral, and rhyolite a volcanic rock.
Stone Meaning: Keys are traditionally associated with new beginnings, and each stone carries its own traditional meaning, such as love for rose quartz and clarity for amethyst.
Can I wear it? Wire wrap it or add a glue-on bail to turn it into a pendant.
What is golden quartz? Quartz with a natural yellow to golden iron mineral coating or inclusion.
Is it a good gift? Yes, keys are a popular gift for new homes, graduations and milestone birthdays.
